Comparing Apples to Apples: How to Select a Basement Contractor

Make Your Wish List, Set a Budget

Selecting a contractor that’s right for you and your family is key to a positive experience and achieving the results you want. There are a lot of remodeling contractors out there that offer their services to choose from. This process can be long and difficult.  How do you know which one is right for you?

Start by making a list of what you want, what you need and what you can’t live without. Figure out how much you’re willing to spend and you have all your finances figured out.

How to Find a Reliable Contractor

Working with a design/build firm or a contractor that has a good working relationship with an independent architect or designer will serve your needs best. Get referrals from friends, family and neighbors. Look for reliable contractors who are professionals. A good start is to go online and do your research.  Look at their website and gather pertinent information. After you have investigated many contractors you need to narrow your search down to just a few.

Now you will be interviewing these contractors. Make sure they have the experience in the type of remodeling project you have in mind. Make sure they explain all aspects of the project with you. Everything from payments, scheduling, selections,, change orders,  and unforeseen problems.

Make sure your personalities and communication styles work well together. If you don’t feel comfortable with them during the interview, you probably won’t feel comfortable during construction.  Remember, they will be part of the family for the entire project and when the project is over.

Ask for examples of past projects that are similar to yours and in the same price range. If possible, go and look at some of these projects. Ask for a list of customers; don’t accept just two or three. This will also give you the opportunity to talk with the homeowners about their experience.

Make sure they are licensed by the state of Minnesota, ask to see it. Also, find out what type of insurance they have and what the limits are. It’s also important to discuss the subcontractors the remodeler will be hiring.

You’re Buying the Entire Process

Take your time and interview them. This should be a lengthy process that involves a lot of thought and preparation. Ask the right questions and your contractor selection will be easy.

Remember, you’re buying the whole process, not just some material and labor at a low price.
